Just Finished Reading: Kiss of Frost

I've had Jennifer Estep's two YA books on my to-read list for quite some time. When I came across a copy of Kiss of Frost, I knew I had to get reading.

After Gwen Frost's police officer mother dies in a car accident, she's sent to Mythos Academy, a boarding school for kids with special powers. Gwen is a gypsy with the gift of psychometry, the ability to read the energy field of an object or person by touch. When Gwen touches a person or one of their possessions, she experiences some of their memories and emotions.

Gwen's conflicted about her gift. Not only does it seem to pale in comparison to the awesome abilities of the Spartans, Amazons and Vikings she goes to school with, she also can't help but feel that her talent led to her mother's untimely death.

In Touch of Frost, one of Gwen's classmates is murdered and she investigates. As she does, she can't help but be annoyed -- and bothered -- by Logan Quinn, a sexy Spartan with dark secrets of his own. As she immerses herself in the case, she learns that she is in terrible danger: the Mythos Academy harbors a dangerous Reaper who wants her dead.

Kiss of Frost finds Gwen suffering through combat training under the watchful eye of Logan Quinn. As the whole school gets distracted by the fun and games of the annual Winter Carnival, Gwen gets the feeling that someone is out to kill her. When danger strikes, will Gwen be able to figure out which of the kids have her back -- and which want to stab her right in the middle of it?

Gwen is an appealing heroine and Estep deftly weaves together many different mythological traditions. The secondary characters are great: tough, pink-loving Daphne, the always-baking Grandma Frost, and of course, Vic. If you've read the books, you know Vic! LOL.

These books are perfect for those who love their YA action-packed. Pick them up if you liked:

  3. I haven't read the first one yet but I have seen this one around so much I want to try it. The cover are cool but I never knew what the books were about until I started reading reviews. I like books about mythology and where students addend an academy. I also like that there is a murder mystery.
