Freebie Friday: Fiction to Film

Welcome to Freebie Friday!

Today is the release day of two big movies based on books.

First, there's Breaking Dawn, Part II. Though I've read all the Twilight books, I've never seen any of the movies -- I do have an explanation, but it's a long one. At this point, I think I'll just wait and do a marathon of all the movies on DVD. But if you're seeing BDII this weekend -- or if you're dragging around today because you caught the midnight showing -- I hope you loved it!

If you're posting about the movie, link up in your comment. I'm dying to hear what you think!

Then, there's Anna Karenina. I liked the book -- lots of angst and intrigue and forbidden romance.

So let's talk fiction to film...

Here are some of my favorite YA books that have been made into movies -- besides the obvious Big Three: Harry PotterTwilight and The Hunger Games:

The Outsiders by S. E. Hinton Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist by David Levithan and Rachel Cohn Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants by Anne Brashares

The Outsiders by S. E Hinton
Yes, the movie has a bit of the 80s cheese factor. But the cast is a total Brat Pack extravaganza: Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez, Tom Cruise, Matt Dillon, Diane Lane, Patrick Swayze....

Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist by David Levithan and Rachel Cohn
I love this book so much and no movie could be quite as good, but again, a great cast: Michael Cera and Kat Dennings are Nick and Norah.

Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants by Ann Brashares
Fun movie with an all-star cast of actors that were must less well-known back then: Amber Tamblyn, Alexis Bledel, America Ferrera, and Blake Lively.

Here are some YA books that have just (or are just about to be) released as films:

Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky pic name pic name

Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky (released September 2012)
City of Bones by Cassandra Clare (releasing August 2013)
Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl (releasing February 2013) Here's the trailer!

And finally, here are some YA books that have been optioned for film and are in various stages of development but haven't -- as far as my research indicates -- actually started filming. Which means that, if the stars align, they could make it to the big screen!

I got a lot of information for this section from an amazing blog post at Big Books/Tiny Voices. Click here to read it.

If you're interested in the topic, this post has SO much info -- check it out to read about even more YA books that have been optioned! The post is from May, so they are missing a few, like John Green's The Fault in Our Stars -- details here.

So, to enter this week's Freebie Friday, either tell me about your favorite film based on a book OR tell me which of these upcoming YA books-to-film you are most excited about.
Open internationally. If the winner, as selected by Rafflecopter, resides in US/Canada they can choose one of the above 15 books OR pick from a short list of 2012 ARCs. Want to know what they are? They're pictured here.

If the winner is international, they can choose one of the 15 books pictured above.

I'm trying this new prize system. Freebie Friday was originally designed as a way for me to share my overflow of books. But given international shipping costs and times, it is cheaper and faster to use The Book Depository to ship to winners outside the US and Canada. I hope this is a good compromise. I don't want to leave out my wonderful international followers! Let me know what you think!

Entries will be accepted until Monday morning at 8:00 am EST. If the account you comment under does not link to a blog or email address, please leave your email in the Google Doc!

NO LONGER ACCEPTING ENTRIES! PLEASE CHECK THIS WEEK'S CURRENT FREEBIE FRIDAY!

  2. Favorite film/book is probably The Princess Bride-it is excellent in both forms!

Despite only reading Twilight, I have seen every movie and will be taking my sister to see this final one (not because I enjoy them but because she's making me.)

I would love to see Heist Society as a movie-I could easily see it on ABC Family or Disney with room for sequels if they come out well.

  4. My favorite book to movie adaptation is The Notebook. In this case I actually like the movie better than the book.

I will probably go see most of these other movies but few live up to the books for me. I always picture to books so much bigger than life, or even the movies, can portray, especially the ones with lots of action in them.

And I agree - movies sometimes don't capture the book as I imagined it.

  10. I am <3in the new YA books being adapted to the big screen! It is so good because then a lot of people become interested in the books, even those who would not at first read it if it was not adapted.

    Even in my case, when The Hunger Games books came out, I though it was so much hyped, and I was a little reluctant to read them, but then the movie came, and I had to read the first book before watching the movie and loved the book, and recently I finished reading Mockingjay {which broke my S2!}

I'm anxious to watch Beautiful Creatures {although I have yet to read the book first} and also I have not watched yet The perks of being a wallflower because I want to read the book first.

And I am also dying to watch the TMI movie, the trailer looks so awesome!

Thanks for the Freebie Friday, Jen! =]]]

I think the first movie is one of the best of the saga and it was thrilling to rediscover the Twilight world, on screen this time.

  43. Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings are my absolute favorite books and I will forever be grateful for the amazing movies they became. Both were done so well and the settings and graphics for gorgeous. I can easily watch any movies from these series' any time and still fall in love like it's the first time seeing it.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Book to movie wise, nothing can compare to Harry Potter. However, the book lover in me doesn't always like it when books are changed to movies. Take The Hunger Games for example. I LOVED the movie, yes, but it's the little things that totally bummed me out, like the fact that he never got his fake leg and such, y'know? It's part of the story! I'm not the biggest Twilight fan, but people went nuts when the first movie came out because it was so unlike the first book. And now they have a surprise ending for the final movie that nobody likes because they're trying to surprise us when we all read the books and know the ending. It's just not cool. Sure, I'm totally excited for City of Bones, and I'm sure I'll love it because the teaser trailer blew my mind, but I'm also sure that as I watch, some things will upset me because they don't stay true to the book. A movie can never fully do a book justice. :/

  65. I really enjoyed BD2. There was a little surprise twist that had people really freaking out but I thought it was great! I'm excited for Catching Fire, The Host, The Mortal Instruments, and Warm Bodies. I'm always excited when any book I read hits theaters. Usually it never lives up to the book but it is still fun to see the world come alive. I would love for Delirium, Divergent, and Vampire Academy to finally start casting and filming. So many books are optioned for a movie but then just never come through.

    1. Now I am dying of curiosity about the twist.
And now that people are missing the Twilight movies, I hope that Vampire Academy can make it to the screen!

  66. oooh i'm curious how Divergent is gonna turn out (I love the book) and Under the Never Sky would also be interesting (I love this book too!). There are not too many movies based on books that I like...I think Jurassic Park did pretty well (I saw that movie in theatre when it came out and have seen it several times since >.<) and Hunger Games was ok...I really got into the first book, refused to read the sequels (too graphic for my taste), and rented DVD from Redbox so I could see what was original and what was Hollywood. Thank you for the freebie! ^.^

  67. My favorite book to movie, besides HP and Hunger Games, is probably The Princess Bride. I'm not sure which one I'm most excited for that's coming out, but The City of Bones trailer was way better than I thought it would be. Also really looking forward to The Hobbit.

  70. My favorite book to movie adaptation apart from the Harry Potter movies (of course!) is Dear John by Nicolas Sparks. The book was beautiful and heart-wrenching and the movie did total justice to the book.

Super excited about Divergent and Blood Red Road!

    Thanks for the giveaway!

  71. My favorite book to movie is definitely and will ALWAYS be The Princess Bride. I don't think I need to explain this. I do also think The Hunger Games was a great book to movie adaptation.

  74. My favorite books to film were the Harry Potter series, seconded by Twilight Saga. I've just watched the Beautiful Creatures trailer in the cinema, but it just didn't make me want to see the movie. I really don't know if I should go to see it in cinema or wait for DVD. I'd like to read the book, maybe it will make me decide. Thanks a lot for the chance!

  75. First of all, yes, thank you for making it international! You the best! ;)
Second I think I'm the only who doesn't like books made into movies, they make everything so commercial and ruin how the characters look in my head. That been said, I think Harry Potter and The Lord of The Rings were books MADE to be movies too, they are so good as books and movies.

    1. I haven't followed all the casting. I did that for the Hunger Games and it just agitated me and then it all turned out fine.
I'm just going to go check it out when it opens.

  81. Ok I have to say Lord of the Rings is probably one of my most favorite books of all time and I believe the movies were done very well.
I also liked Interview with the Vampire and I liked Stuart Townsend portraying Lestat in Queen of the Damned. I wish they would go back and redo these though.
I am nervous about City of Bones. I am just not feeling the guy they have to play Jace. Maybe it will grow on me.
I am also looking forward to watching The Hunger Games. I love the actors/actresses that are in it so I think I will like the movie too.

  82. Now that the City of Bones trailer is out, I can't wait to see that. I'm ridiculously excited, even though I'm not crazy about all the casting choices. I saw The Perks of Being a Wallflower which was crazy good. I loved it. My friend and I were openly sobbing in the theatre, but it was worth it. I also do love the movies of The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. I just find they captured something so organic about the friendship between the 4 girls. In the hands of another writer/director, it could have been a cliched mess.
