Extra! Extra! Happy February

Extra! Extra!

Extra! Extra! is my weekend post featuring brand new additions to my TBR pile as well as a summary of what's new on the blog.

This weekend I'm linking to Stacking the Shelves @ Tynga's Reviews or to Sunday Post hosted by Kimba the Caffeinated Book Reviewer.

GIVEAWAYS:

For Freebie Friday, I'm giving away an ARC of Into the Still Blue -- open to US residents!

If you live outside the US, you can enter to win Ignite Me and you can also enter my monthly Hot Off the Presses giveaway -- January's winner will be drawn soon!

NEW BOOKS:

I was very excited that I got to attend ALA this year. Well, maybe "attend" is not the right word. Because of some family obligations, I was really just there for a few hours. But I got to hang out with my great friend Lauren from Love is Not a Triangle, say hi to Jamie from the Perpetual Page Turner, who I'd met at BEA in May, and pick up a few great ARCs.

Here are three that I'm excited to try:

Half Bad by Sally Green (Viking March 4)

In modern-day England, witches live alongside humans: White witches, who are good; Black witches, who are evil; and fifteen-year-old Nathan, who is both. Nathan’s father is the world’s most powerful and cruel Black witch, and his mother is dead. He is hunted from all sides. Trapped in a cage, beaten and handcuffed, Nathan must escape before his sixteenth birthday, at which point he will receive three gifts from his father and come into his own as a witch—or else he will die. But how can Nathan find his father when his every action is tracked, when there is no one safe to trust—not even family, not even the girl he loves?
This one is pretty hyped, which makes me a bit nervous, but I'm starting it today!

Dark Metropolis by Jaclyn Dolamore (Disney-Hyperion June 17)

Sixteen-year-old Thea Holder's mother is cursed with a spell that's driving her mad, and whenever they touch, Thea is chilled by the magic, too. With no one else to contribute, Thea must make a living for both of them in a sinister city, where danger lurks and greed rules. Thea spends her nights waitressing at the decadent Telephone Club attending to the glitzy clientele. But when her best friend, Nan, vanishes, Thea is compelled to find her. She meets Freddy, a young, magnetic patron at the club, and he agrees to help her uncover the city's secrets-even while he hides secrets of his own.

I love historical fiction and I've heard positive things about Magic Under Glass, the author's prior series. I'm excited to try this!

Hexed by Michelle Krys (Delacorte June 10)

If high school is all about social status, Indigo Blackwood has it made. Sure, her quirky mom owns an occult shop, and a nerd just won’t stop trying to be her friend, but Indie is a popular cheerleader with a football-star boyfriend and a social circle powerful enough to ruin everyone at school. Who wouldn’t want to be her? Then a guy dies right before her eyes. And the dusty old family Bible her mom is freakishly possessive of is stolen. But it’s when a frustratingly sexy stranger named Bishop enters Indie’s world that she learns her destiny involves a lot more than pom-poms and parties. If she doesn’t get the Bible back, every witch on the planet will die. And that’s seriously bad news for Indie, because according to Bishop, she’s a witch too.Suddenly forced into a centuries-old war between witches and sorcerers, Indie’s about to uncover the many dark truths about her life—and a future unlike any she ever imagined on top of the cheer pyramid.

I'll be honest, Lauren had to twist my arm a little about this one. But I loved Buffy so I'm looking forward to giving it a try...

OTHER NEWS:

Tomorrow is Superbowl Sunday here in the US and .... I'm not that excited. For those of you who are, I hope it's a great game. I plan on getting some reading and blog posts done. I've got a few new ideas I'm really excited about, and being at ALA gave me some great ideas for new Trending Thursday posts. So I'm off to do that.

Happy weekend!  Leave me a comment and let me know what you're up to!

  4. Not sure about those names in Hexed-kind of weird! I am moderately excited about the Super Bowl-can't quite decide who I want to root for. I used to live in Seattle but I think it's a compelling narrative to have Peyton win again with his new team...Happy reading to you!

  5. Half Bad sound good but I'm wary about any book that is hyped up.

  6. Hexed and Dark Metropolis are both on my tbr and I see you're reading Half Bad. How are you liking it? I have never watched the super bowl. Totally un-American, I know. :) We probably won't watch it this year either, but we'll see. I've got a ton going on this month and am really excited about it. I'm also planning on making a few minor changes on my blog - have already made a few and we'll be updated Prism's design, so pretty busy all around. I can't wait for Cress to come on Tuesday!!! I'll definitely be reading it right away. :) Have a fabulous week!

  7. I am so crazy eager to read Half Bad it almost hurts. I hope you LOVE it. Dark Metropolis intrigues me...so curious about it. I'm not excited for the super bowl either. I'm not much into sports so won't bother watching it. I hope that everyone that loves it enjoys though. Maybe I can get some reading time in :-) Have a great week Jen!

  8. I think someone would have had to talk me into Hexed, too, lol, even though I also love Buffy. I'm very intrigued by Dark Metropolis. I just love that era. :) I'm not excited about the Super Bowl, either. I know that's weird, coming from a Texan, but it is what it is. Hoping to get some reading done while the hubby is watching, though there are a few commercials I'd like to see, ha. Hope you have a great weekend!

  9. Great haul! I want to someday make it to ALA. Dark Metropolis sounds like it has a great plot and setting. I picked up one of Dolamore's books this week, but haven't read any of hers before. We are going to watch Sherlock instead of the Super Bowl here. Happy Reading!

  10. Ahh! I need to go to one of these ALA and BEA conventions! Sadly, the only one I go nearby is LA's Festival of Books and I've been going for 2 years straight! Hope these reads are great! Hexed sounds amazing and I hope my ARC comes soon, dying to dive into it!

    Happy Reading

  11. I'm starting Half Bad too, nervous about the hype but excited! Glad you got to go to ALA, even if it was only for a few hours. That's always a fun time. I'm also not really that excited about the super bowl. I'll probably read and maybe just watch a few of the ads. :-) Happy reading!

  12. It's all about the witch books this month, huh? I haven't read many good witchy books lately. I've been reading a lot of contemporary and dystopians. I actually just started Survive by Alex Morel because I read your review of it on goodreads and decided to buy it on the spot! I'm not a big football fan so I think I'll distract myself with reading too! :)

  13. There are so many witch books gracing the shelves lately, and I'm both in a yay mood as well as a 'gaaah not another phase' mood. Haha, if you know what I mean. :P

  14. I haven't heard of the books but I hope you like them because the sound great from the synopses (synopsises?) I know what you mean about the Super Bowl. I usually never watch the game but I'm going over to a friend's house for like a Super Bowl party so I'm really just excited to watch it with friends lol. Happy reading, though! <33

  16. Everyone keeps asking me what I think of Half Bad lol I guess I got it at BEA and didn't even know because it had a plain black cover without a synopsis. I'll be reading it soon.
