Trending Thursday: Royals

Okay, just ONE more title trends post for today's Trending Thursday.  Recently one of my blog readers pointed out the "queen" trend in YA titles. So I have set up another contest -- one that pits one royal against another.

Of kings, princes, queens and princesses, who do you think rules the YA title contest? I had my suspicions too, but some of the results surprised me. (And of course, this is fairly unscientific as I get writer's cramp making my lists at some point. And I'm only including the first title in a series, because Meg Cabot has written enough royal titles to make my hand fall off...)

Here we go ... ladies first!

PRINCESSES:

Onto the QUEENS...

How about the PRINCES?

And last but not least, the KINGS:

So here are my overall observations: I thought these titles would only be used in fantasy and retellings, forgetting they are sometimes used ironically in contemporary titles. I knew there were very few kings in YA, but was surprised how good a showing the princes put up. And was not surprised that, at least in my unscientific count, the QUEENS rule!

  1. I thought all the Queen books were going to be high fantasy, but I was surprised to see it wasn't really the case. I totally forgot the final Ghost and Goth Girl book was even called that!! I love that series :)
