Trending Thursday: Where There's Smoke, There's Fire. And Ashes....

Welcome to Trending Thursday, a blog feature that lets me point out some kind of trend in YA lit.

Over the past few weeks, I've looked at title trends, including Bones. On that post, a reader commented that YA books (especially dystopians and fantasy) have a lot of elemental items in their title. I've done another post on covers featuring Great Balls of Fire, but I thought I'd focus on titles with Fire and various other Fire-Related Stuff...

We'll start with the Smoke...

Bright Smoke Cold Fire Boy in the Smoke Curses and Smoke
Daughter of Smoke and Bone Smoke Ruby in the Smoke
Amber Smoke Holding Smoke Conspiracy of Blood and Smoke Smoked

Now for the Fire...

Fire Catching Fire City of Heavenly Fire
Girl of Fire and Thorns Throne of Fire Fire With Fire
Heir of Fire Fire Study Fire & Flood
Trial by Fire Trial by Fire Ice Like Fire

And after Fire, there are Ashes...

Kingdom of Ashes Ember in the Ashes City of Ashes
Ashes, Ashes Ashes of Twilight Shards and Ashes
Ashes on the Waves Inheritance of Ashes Gilded Ashes

That was fun -- if you have any other title themes you want me to feature, let me know!

  1. I think I'm more likely to read a book if "smoke" is in the title. It's just so mysterious.

  4. I definitely have noticed this trend. XD I don't even know if I'm fond of it or not?! I think the "Fire" is become nearly cliche. heh.

(Have you done a trending Thursday on "Queens" in titles before? Because omg there are SO MANY OF THEM. :O Shadow Queen, The Orphan Queen, The Impostor Queen, Queen of Shadows, Red Queen, The Exiled Queen, Iron Queen, Just a Queen, The Queen's Choice....*collapses under queens* XDXD)

    1. I think Cassandra Clare may have spawned the "Bones" trend, and I think Hunger Games with Fire. In YA at least...

  7. Ha. It has been quite a trend more recently, mind you. Something about the destructive qualities of fire that gives a title such an impact. Love it!

    1. Yeah, out of the three, I think fire is kind of dramatic/threatening, and smoke sort of mysterious and ashes ... I don't know. I guess there's the "phoenix from the ashes" thing...

  8. that sure is a lot of smoke and fire and ashes. I didn't realize there were so many.funny how trend don't cross the mind until you really start to think about it or see it pointed out. i like this post.

  9. This is a really common trend it seems! Lots of books to do with things all fire related... I wonder why that is xd Because of death and perish which leads to suspense? Catching Fire would call the opposite seeing as it has to do with burning bright against something.
